Monitoring fibrillation in the mechanical production of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers from bleached spruce thermomechanical pulp

Ferran Serra-Parareda et al.

Summary: This study assessed the main characteristics of lignocellulosic micro/nanofibers from bleached thermomechanical pulp while considering cationic demand as an effective monitoring parameter of the fibrillation process. The mechanically treated pulp was passed through a high-pressure homogenizer to produce different fibrillation degrees of LCMNF, with CD identified as a robust parameter for monitoring the process. WRV was found to not be a reliable indicator of fibrillation extent due to lignin content variations.

Influence of biological origin on the tensile properties of cellulose nanopapers

Katri S. Kontturi et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanopapers are made from sustainable cellulose nanofibers, but the full strength of the CNFs is not utilized in the resulting nanopapers. Basic principles of paper physics can be applied to reveal the relationships between CNF strength, bonding, and biological origin in nanopapers. The presence of hemicelluloses in NFC nanopapers strengthens the bonding between CNFs, similar to the primary cell wall of plants.

Nanocellulose Characterization Challenges

Ana Balea et al.

Summary: Despite two decades of exhaustive research confirming the extraordinary properties of nanocellulose (NC) and exploring potential applications, the NC market has not reached its full potential. Lack of process-adapted measuring tools capable of characterizing NC at acceptable speed and reliability is a main obstacle. Reliable characterization methodologies and new standards are crucial for reproducible research results and quality control specifications for NC products.

Agroindustry Residues as a Source for Cellulose Nanofiibers Production

Mayra A. Marino et al.

Summary: This study aimed to produce cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from four different crop waste biomass in Brazil: orange bagasse, corn husks, sugarcane straw, and coffee residues. CNFs were obtained with diameters in the range 50-70 nm, with high crystallinity indexes (CI) for orange bagasse and corn husks, and varying yields and CI values for different raw materials. The findings suggest that the four-crop waste biomass can serve as excellent starting materials for CNF production, adding value to agro-industrial waste and potentially bringing economic benefits to Brazilian crops production.
