Stratification strength and light climate explain variation in chlorophyll a at the continental scale in a European multilake survey in a heatwave summer

Daphne Donis et al.

Summary: This study collected data from 230 lakes in Europe, finding that light climate and stratification strength are the main explanatory variables for phytoplankton biomass variance. In nutrient-rich lakes, light and stratification metrics are better predictors for phytoplankton biomass.

Internal loop sustains cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic lakes: Evidence from organic nitrogen and ammonium regeneration

Jingya Xue et al.

Summary: Algal bloom species can rely on internal regenerated ammonium for growth during nitrogen-limited periods. In a eutrophic lake, it was found that NH4+ regeneration rates were higher in summer than in winter and correlated significantly with total phytoplankton biomass, Cyanophyta biomass, and other organic and nitrogen concentrations. Cyanophyta was identified as the dominant phylum accelerating NH4+ regeneration during summer months.
