Simultaneous biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants by advanced treatment: A review

Qi Zhou et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the key to improving the water quality of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) - simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The composition of secondary effluent from municipal WWTPs is introduced, and three main treatment processes for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal are summarized. Their performances, mechanisms, influencing factors, and microbial community structures are analyzed. The advanced removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by different technologies is compared and summarized. The challenges and future prospects of simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus technologies for secondary effluent are proposed.

Preparation, characterization, and applications of Fe-based catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for organics removal: A review*

Jiwei Liu et al.

Summary: Fe-based catalysts, known for their low cost, high efficiency, and non-toxic properties, are commonly used in aqueous solutions to degrade organic contaminants in AOPs. A systematic review of their synthesis, characterization, and applications is lacking, highlighting the need to evaluate their performance in various AOPs systems. Research on the activation mechanisms of different oxidants by Fe-based catalysts is also crucial for future advancements in this field.

Pre-coagulation for membrane fouling mitigation in an aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor: A comparative study of modified microbial and organic flocculants

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of modified microbial flocculants (MMFs) with conventional organic flocculants in mitigating membrane fouling. The results show that MMF has better performance in pollutant removal and membrane fouling control. The study also reveals that cake layer formation is the main mechanism of membrane fouling and MMF can reduce the accumulation of foulants on the membrane surface. Correlation analysis indicates that total phosphorus, polysaccharide, zeta potential, and particle size have the greatest correlation with fouling resistance.

Impact of polysaccharide and protein interactions on membrane fouling: Particle deposition and layer formation

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the membrane fouling mechanism using filtration modeling combined with surface plasmon resonance analysis. The results showed that initial fouling on hydrophilic membranes was primarily attributed to particle-membrane interactions, while fouling on hydrophobic membranes was dominantly caused by interactions among the particles. The interaction between proteins and polysaccharides led to more severe membrane fouling, and hydrophobic membranes were more sensitive to it.

Removal of natural organic matter from source water: Review on coagulants, dual coagulation, alternative coagulants, and mechanisms

H. N. P. Dayarathne et al.

Summary: Natural organic matter (NOM) can significantly impact drinking water quality, causing taste, odour, and colour problems. Removing NOM is challenging as it can lead to the formation of disinfection by-products which are harmful to human health. Various technologies have been used to remove NOM, with coagulants being the most common method.

Fe(II)-activated peroxymonosulfate coupled with nanofiltration removes natural organic matter and sulfamethoxazole in natural surface water: Performance and mechanisms

Langming Bai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Fe(II)/PMS coupled with NF outperformed single treatments in removing organic compounds and sulfate anions. HPSEC analysis revealed the breakdown of macromolecular organic matter into smaller fragments by Fe(II)/PMS oxidation. Zeta potential analysis showed the negatively charged small organic molecules generated during oxidation.
