On-site carwash wastewater treatment and reuse: a systematic review

Javad Torkashvand et al.

Summary: The carwash wastewater has unique quality characteristics and requires various treatment processes. The membrane process is the most commonly used method, followed by chemical coagulation, electrocoagulation, electrooxidation, and membrane bioreactor. The treatment efficiency for pollutants such as turbidity, oil content, and COD is reported to be high. However, there are limitations such as low water recovery rates, rapid fouling, sludge production, energy consumption, and changes in effluent quality. Therefore, short treatment time, optimal efficiency, operation condition, and high water recovery ratio are critical aspects of on-site treatment and reuse of carwash wastewater.

Comparative Study on Advanced Nitrogen Removal of Landfill Leachate Treated by SBR and SBBR

Jinfeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that advanced nitrogen removal from landfill leachate can be achieved through SBR and SBBR without the addition of external carbon sources. SBBR showed a 16.7% improvement in nitrogen removal efficiency compared to SBR, attributed to the enhanced simultaneous nitrification and denitrification effect of the biofilm.

Escherichia coli Reduction in Water by Zero-Valent Iron-Sand Filtration Is Based on Water Quality Parameters

Seongyun Kim et al.

Summary: Improving microbial quality of agricultural water through ZVI-sand filtration is effective in reducing E. coli levels. The study found that the composition of ZVI in sand filters and influent water type impact the effectiveness of E. coli reduction. In waters with low turbidity values, ZVI-sand filtration showed more effective reduction of E. coli levels.

Integrated Treatment at Laboratory Scale of a Mature Landfill Leachate via Active Filtration and Anaerobic Digestion: Preliminary Results

Filippo Fazzino et al.

Summary: The management of mature landfill leachate (MLL) is a crucial issue, and this study investigated the feasibility of integrated treatment at the laboratory scale using synthetic leachate. Results showed that active filtration using zero-valent iron mixed with lapillus or granular activated carbon effectively removes heavy metals, and adding pre-treated MLL during anaerobic digestion enhances methane production efficiency.

Influence of Carbon Agglomerate Formation on Micropollutants Removal in Combined PAC-Membrane Filtration Processes for Advanced Wastewater Treatment

Grit Hoffmann et al.

Summary: Micropollutants (MPs) in wastewater pose environmental challenges and require advanced treatment methods for removal, such as dosing powdered activated carbon (PAC) before membrane filtration. Research shows that the efficiency of MPs removal is influenced by the PAC concentration in the stock suspension, with lower concentrations leading to better removal. Therefore, maintaining a low PAC concentration in the stock suspension can enhance the overall performance of the treatment process.

Membrane Filtration Opportunities for the Treatment of Black Liquor in the Paper and Pulp Industry

Olenka Jibaja Valderrama et al.

Summary: Black liquor, a by-product of the kraft pulping process, requires costly treatment to avoid environmental and financial implications. Nanofiltration is being studied as a promising alternative to recycle cooking chemicals, but the development of pH-stable membranes is crucial for industrial-scale operation. Membrane A shows higher potential for treating black liquor due to its competitive permeate flux and high rejection of organic components and salts.

A systematic review on membrane technology for carwash wastewater treatment: efficiency and limitations

Javad Torkashvand et al.

Summary: Membrane technology is widely used in carwash wastewater treatment, with the advantages of high efficiency in reducing turbidity and chemical oxygen demand; however, the major limitations of membrane technology are rapid and severe flux reduction, as well as pH changes in the permeate. Pre-treatment processes can reduce fouling and enhance the effectiveness of carwash wastewater treatment through membrane processes.
