Investigation of Multi-Frequency SAR Data to Retrieve the Soil Moisture within a Drip Irrigation Context Using Modified Water Cloud Model

Emna Ayari et al.

Summary: The objective of this paper is to estimate soil moisture in pepper crops with drip irrigation in a semi-arid area in Tunisia using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The sensitivity of different polarizations and bands of SAR data to soil moisture and vegetation properties is examined, and simulated SAR signals are used to analyze the potential of the proposed model. The results indicate the potential of the model to simulate radar signals over heterogeneous soil moisture fields.

Detecting and mapping irrigated areas in a Mediterranean environment by using remote sensing soil moisture and a land surface model

Jacopo Dari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the capability of remotely sensed soil moisture products to detect irrigation signals in an intensively irrigated area in North East Spain, proposing a method to map actually irrigated areas using the K-means clustering algorithm. The data sets used in this study include SMOS, SMAP, Sentinel-1, and ASCAT, with downscaled versions obtained by the DISPATCH algorithm. L-band passive microwave downscaling products, particularly SMAP at 1 km, show the best performance in detecting irrigation signals in the study area.

An Operational Framework for Mapping Irrigated Areas at Plot Scale Using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Data

Hassan Bazzi et al.

Summary: This study presents an operational methodology for mapping irrigated areas at plot scale using SAR and optical time series data. The method was successfully applied over four years, with a newly developed irrigation classification model achieving high overall accuracy. Validation using real in situ data showed that the proposed approach had similar accuracy to classifiers built directly from field data. Analysis revealed that classification accuracy was influenced by precipitation levels during the growing season.
