Understanding the environmental roles of herbicides on cyanobacteria, cyanotoxins, and cyanoHABs

Fernanda Breda-Alves et al.

Summary: Agrochemicals such as herbicides alter the physical and chemical conditions of aquatic ecosystems, affecting the community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton. The formation of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms can be facilitated by herbicides at environmentally relevant concentrations, leading to a cascading toxicological effect on non-targeted organisms and the aquatic food chain. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of herbicides on cyanobacteria and phytoplankton communities.

Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms in Aquatic Ecosystems: A Comprehensive Outlook on Current and Emerging Mitigation and Control Approaches

Assaf Sukenik et al.

Summary: Toxic cyanobacteria blooms have worsened over the past three decades, impacting coastal and lake water quality worldwide. Research is ongoing to understand the factors driving ecological imbalances and the role of cyanobacteria-produced toxins. The goal is to develop strategies to restore water bodies to their pre-toxic bloom state and mitigate the blooms in the short term to allow affected communities to enjoy safe water resources.
