Summary: The research revealed the presence of a long-chain postsynaptic neurotoxin named alpha-EPTX-Oh3a in the venom of the King Cobra. The neurotoxin was found to inhibit indirect twitches and contractile responses of tissues to acetylcholine and carbachol. Additionally, the Thai Red Cross Society King Cobra antivenom was able to partially reverse the in vitro neurotoxic effects of the neurotoxin. This study has important implications for understanding the pharmacological effects of King Cobra venom.

The findings emphasize the urgent need for innovative, pan-India effective antivenoms to protect the lives and livelihoods of the country's snakebite victims.

Elucidating the Venom Diversity in Sri Lankan Spectacled Cobra (Naja naja) through De Novo Venom Gland Transcriptomics, Venom Proteomics and Toxicity Neutralization

Summary: The study revealed a high diversity of toxin gene families in the Sri Lankan N. naja venom, with three-finger toxins (3FTX) being the most abundantly expressed. These toxins, especially S-type cytotoxins/cardiotoxins (CTX) and alpha-neurotoxins (α-NTX), are implicated in the local tissue necrosis and neuromuscular paralysis caused by the Sri Lankan N. naja venom. Intra-species variations in toxin gene sequences and expression levels between the Sri Lankan N. naja and other geographical specimens highlight potential antigenic diversity that impacts the effectiveness of antivenom treatment.
