Safety of allogeneic umbilical cord blood infusions for the treatment of neurological conditions: a systematic review of clinical studies

Madison C. B. Paton et al.

Summary: Allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB) infusion for the treatment of neurological conditions appears to be safe based on a systematic review of 10 studies, with no reported serious adverse events definitely or probably related to the infusion. Variability between studies was noted, but overall safety concerns seem to be minimal even with variable HLA matching or no immunosuppression.

A Review of Placenta and Umbilical Cord-Derived Stem Cells and the Immunomodulatory Basis of Their Therapeutic Potential in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Wai Kit Chia et al.

Summary: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a devastating lung disorder in preterm infants caused by abnormal reparative response, and current treatment strategies have limited success. Stem cell therapy, particularly using placenta-derived and umbilical cord-derived stem cells, shows potential in mitigating BPD, but further research and clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness.

Therapeutic potential of stem cells for preterm infant brain damage: Can we move from the heterogeneity of preclinical and clinical studies to established therapeutics?

Sofia Passera et al.

Summary: Acquired perinatal brain injuries present a significant challenge for healthcare providers and have broad social, emotional, and financial implications. Stem cell therapy shows promise in reducing perinatal brain injury, but there is a lack of focused trials on treating brain injuries in preterm born infants. Standardizing stem cell products and testing them across various injury models could help in the development of effective clinical trials.

European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2021: Newborn resuscitation and support of transition of infants at birth

John Madar et al.

Summary: The European Resuscitation Council has produced newborn life support guidelines based on ILCOR's 2020 CoSTR. These guidelines cover various aspects of management of term and preterm infants, including factors before delivery, thermal control, umbilical cord management, initial assessment, airway and breathing support, communication with parents, and considerations for withholding or discontinuing support.

Human Cord Blood Derived Unrestricted Somatic Stem Cells Restore Aquaporin Channel Expression, Reduce Inflammation and Inhibit the Development of Hydrocephalus After Experimentally Induced Perinatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Deepti Purohit et al.

Summary: The study showed that injecting USSCs into the cerebral ventricles of rabbit pups with IVH reduced ventricular size, cellular infiltration, and ependymal wall disruption, restored aquaporin expression, and affected gene expression. USSCs exert anti-inflammatory effects and alleviate the consequences of IVH.

Stem cells for bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants: A randomized controlled phase II trial

So Yoon Ahn et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the safety and feasibility of MSC transplantation for BPD in preterm infants through a phase I clinical trial. The efficacy of MSCs for BPD treatment in premature infants was investigated in a phase II trial, where although inflammatory cytokines were significantly reduced, the overall primary outcome was not significantly improved. Subgroup analysis showed a significant improvement with MSC transplantation in the 23-24 GW group.

Feasibility of Umbilical Cord Blood Collection in Neonates at Risk of Brain Damage-A Step Toward Autologous Cell Therapy for a High-risk Population

Angela Segler et al.

Summary: Evidence is emerging for the potential of umbilical cord blood (UCB) cell therapies in treating neurological diseases. Collection of UCB in neonates at high risk of brain damage is feasible, with the quantity and quality of obtained UCB correlating with gestational age. While some cases were missed, the collected UCB contains a sufficient cell count for potential therapy.
