Unmanned Aerial System-Based Multispectral Water Quality Monitoring in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)

Melisa A. Isgro et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-resolution multispectral data acquired by unmanned aerial drones combined with in situ chemical data to assess water quality parameters related to mining-associated water pollution. Reliable empirical models were developed using regression analysis to generate spatial distribution maps for effective monitoring of acid mine drainage.

Evaluation of radiometric calibration of drone-based imagery for improving shallow bathymetry retrieval

Evangelos Alevizos et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of extracting high-resolution, shallow bathymetry from drone-based imagery using empirical methods. The results show that radiometric image corrections greatly enhance the correlation coefficient between bathymetry data and reflectance mosaics. It is also observed that the Red band and its associated logarithmic band ratios show good correlation with depth regardless of radiometric corrections. This study suggests that radiometric calibration is crucial in empirical bathymetry retrieval and that applying radiometric corrections on common RGB cameras is cost-effective.

Geomorphometric analysis of nearshore sedimentary bedforms from high-resolution multi-temporal satellite-derived bathymetry

Evangelos Alevizos et al.

Summary: Monitoring sedimentary bedforms is essential for coastal planning projects, and this study demonstrates the use of high resolution satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) to monitor nearshore bedforms at the northern coast of Chania, Greece. The study shows that crescentic bar systems near the coast change shape on an annual scale, highlighting the importance of temporal SDB mapping for effective coastal monitoring. Multi-temporal SDB maps provide valuable observational evidence about local hydrodynamics which can benefit coastal engineering applications.

A multi-scalar approach to marine survey and underwater archaeological site prospection in Murujuga, Western Australia

Chelsea Wiseman et al.

Summary: Researchers have presented a methodology to locate underwater archaeological sites, focusing on priority survey areas determined from onshore archaeological records and using remote sensing to identify potential ancient landscapes and preserved sites in northwestern Australia. The application of this methodology resulted in the discovery of the first two confirmed sub-tidal ancient Aboriginal archaeological sites on Australia's continental shelf.

Soil exchangeable cations estimation using Vis-NIR spectroscopy in different depths: Effects of multiple calibration models and spiking

Dongxue Zhao et al.

Summary: The study aims to determine the best model for predicting topsoil exchangeable calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium; evaluate the applicability of the best topsoil model for subsurface and subsoil exchangeable cations; explore the effect of spiking on subsurface and subsoil prediction using the topsoil spectral library; and assess if building a profile spectral library with all depths improves prediction. PLSR was superior for predicting topsoil exchangeable cations, while Cubist outperformed PLSR in certain cases when spiking was applied and a profile spectral library was considered. Topsoil PLSR could also be used to predict subsurface and subsoil exchangeable calcium and magnesium, with spiking improving prediction. Profile spectral library achieved equivalent results when considering topsoil samples coupled with spiking.

Archaeological prospection in ultra-shallow aquatic environments: the case of the prehistoric submerged site of Lambayanna, Greece

Nikos Papadopoulos et al.

Summary: This study aims to adapt, test, and validate various geophysical mapping and imaging methods for reconstructing ancient built environments under water layers. By exploring the submerged prehistoric site of Lambayanna in Greece, the research demonstrates the complementary nature of multiple geophysical methods in underwater archaeological contexts, providing useful information for understanding complex archaeological sites around the Mediterranean. The successful transfer of established geophysical methods into the ultra-shallow aquatic environment presents an innovative approach for sustainable management of coastal cultural resources amidst climate change and sea-level rise risks.

Assessment of Empirical Algorithms for Shallow Water Bathymetry Using Multi-Spectral Imagery of Pearl River Delta Coast, China

Chunzhu Wei et al.

Summary: The study compared different regression models for bathymetry mapping in the Pearl River Delta, demonstrating that random forest regression model outperformed others, and three-band combinations were superior to two-band combinations in all models. Despite differences in spatial resolution and band wavelength, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 performed similarly in bathymetry estimation.

Using a UAV-Mounted Multispectral Camera for the Monitoring of Marine Macrophytes

Alejandro Roman et al.

Summary: This study utilized a UAV equipped with a 10-band multispectral camera and different algorithms to monitor marine macrophytes in the Bay of Cadiz Natural Park. The results confirmed the efficiency of the MLC technique in detecting seagrass meadows and studying marine macrophytes in coastal areas. The study inferred the presence of specific marine plant species within the study area.
