On the land emissivity assumption and Landsat-derived surface urban heat islands: A global analysis

Summary: The study shows that adjusting the ε values derived from Landsat measurements for LST can enhance the contrast of summer to winter daytime SUHI. The global ensemble mean SUHI ranges from 2.42 degrees C in summer to 0.46 degrees C in winter. There are variations in the sensitivity of urban and rural land to ε, and models tend to underestimate SUHI by 4 degrees C in both summer and winter compared to satellite-derived values.

The findings of this study will help in developing effective local-scale climate change adaptation plans for the projected substantial increase in urban population in Bangladesh in the future.
