Exploring a landslide inventory created by automated web data mining: the case of Italy

Rachele Franceschini et al.

Summary: Nowadays, there are several systems for setting up landslide inventories, but they rarely rely on automated or real-time updates. Mass media can provide reliable information about natural hazard events. In this study, an existing data mining algorithm was used to automatically collect landslide news in Italy, and the collected data were analyzed to assess their distribution and potential use for hazard mapping.

Semi-automated regional classification of the style of activity of slow rock-slope deformations using PS InSAR and SqueeSAR velocity data

Chiara Crippa et al.

Summary: The study combines original inventory of slow rock-slope deformations with PS-InSAR and SqueeSAR datasets to develop a semi-automated approach for characterizing and classifying slow rock-slope deformations in Lombardia. By analyzing displacement rate distributions and using machine learning classification, the study identifies groups of slow rock-slope deformations with consistent styles of activity, providing objective and cost-effective support for land planning and infrastructure integrity prioritization.

Slow-moving landslide risk assessment combining Machine Learning and InSAR techniques

A. Novellino et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel methodology integrating machine learning algorithms to assess landslide risk for slow-moving mass movements. By analyzing InSAR data, it identifies fifteen slow-moving phenomena traceable since 1955, with seven currently active landslides characterized by seasonal velocity patterns. This new methodology offers a different landslide risk scenario compared to existing official documents and provides insights on developing landslide risk management strategies worldwide.

Summary: Multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MTInSAR) is a reliable technique for measuring ground motion, producing deformation maps with high-density point-like measurement points (MP). Assessing the feasibility of interferometric analysis and modeling the effects of local topography and land cover are essential for deriving accurate and efficient results in MTInSAR applications.

Numerical modelling of land subsidence related to groundwater withdrawal in the Firenze-Prato-Pistoia basin (central Italy)

Mattia Ceccatelli et al.

Summary: The study found that the city of Pistoia is experiencing long-term subsidence due to groundwater extraction, especially in areas related to horticulture. Climate change and groundwater pumping may further exacerbate ground displacement, highlighting the importance of developing proper groundwater management policies to sustainably utilize water resources.
