Surface temperature controls the pattern of post-earthquake landslide activity

Marco Loche et al.

Summary: This study found a positive correlation between land surface temperature (LST) and the occurrence and persistence of landslides after earthquakes, suggesting that healing processes can restore the thermal sensitivity of slope materials, thereby affecting landslide occurrence.

Rapidly Evolving Controls of Landslides After a Strong Earthquake and Implications for Hazard Assessments

Xuanmei Fan et al.

Summary: Strong earthquakes on mountain slopes can produce a large number of unconsolidated deposits that are prone to remobilization by aftershocks and rainstorms. This study reveals that seismic-related variables decrease in prediction capability with time, while hydro-topographic parameters become more important and predominant within a decade, highlighting the need for updated hazard assessment models in postearthquake landscapes.

Spatial cross-validation is not the right way to evaluate map accuracy

Alexandre M. J-C Wadoux et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that cross-validation statistics in mapping studies are often optimistic due to the neglect of spatial autocorrelation. A numerical experiment on above-ground biomass mapping demonstrates that standard cross-validation results in smaller bias compared to spatial cross-validation. Spatial cross-validation lacks theoretical foundation and should not be used for map accuracy assessment, while standard cross-validation is inadequate for clustered data. Design-unbiased accuracy assessment can be achieved through probability sampling and design-based inference without considering spatial autocorrelation.

Machine learning in earthquake- and typhoon-triggered landslide susceptibility mapping and critical factor identification

Muhammad Zeeshan Ali et al.

Summary: This study developed landslide susceptibility maps using machine learning for earthquake and typhoon-triggered landslides in Pakistan and Taiwan, comparing traditional (logistic regression) and modern techniques (decision tree). Results showed that the spatial pattern of susceptibility map from logistic regression is continuously distributed, while that from the decision tree is crisp and sharp.

Temporal Variations in Landslide Distributions Following Extreme Events: Implications for Landslide Susceptibility Modeling

J. N. Jones et al.

Summary: This study quantified the spatial distribution variations of monsoon-triggered landslides in Nepal over different years, finding significant changes in landslide distribution in years affected by extreme events such as storms, earthquakes, and floods. Developing susceptibility models using more than 6-8 years of landslide data showed consistently good accuracy in hindcasting landslide occurrence.

New Insight into Post-seismic Landslide Evolution Processes in the Tropics

Hakan Tanyas et al.

Summary: Earthquakes not only increase landslide susceptibility during the post-seismic phase, but also have limited observations regarding these processes under tropical conditions. The study shows that landslide susceptibility returns to pre-seismic levels in less than a year in the study areas considered.
