Remote sensing strategies to characterization of drought, vegetation dynamics in relation to climate change from 1983 to 2016 in Tibet and Xinjiang Province, China

Haixing Zhang et al.

Summary: Drought is a complex issue in Tibet and Xinjiang due to land cover changes, vegetation dynamics, and climate. The study analyzed NDVI and seasonal vegetation dynamics using NASA data, finding 2006, 2008, and 2012 as severe drought years in the region. Positive correlations between certain indices indicate their usefulness in monitoring drought events in the agricultural regions of Tibet and Xinjiang.

Comparative evaluation of drought indices for monitoring drought based on remote sensing data

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the applicability of different drought indices for monitoring drought events in China. It found that VCI and TCI are better for monitoring long-term drought conditions, while SPI-1 has a higher correlation with PCI for short-term drought monitoring. SMCI has better correlation with short-term in situ drought index. Correlations with combined drought indices were better than with single drought indices.

Monitoring drought events and vegetation dynamics in relation to climate change over mainland China from 1983 to 2016

Shahzad Ali et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the impact of drought on vegetation trends in mainland China using data from 1983 to 2016, revealing severe drought conditions in the region. Various vegetation indices show significant increases during spring and summer, with stability in September and further increases in October. Drought monitoring tools such as TVDI, NDVI, NAP, NVSWI, and VCI values confirm severe drought events in 1984, 1993, and 2007 in mainland China.

Soil moisture-based index for agricultural drought assessment: SMADI application in Pernambuco State-Brazil

Alzira Gabrielle Soares Saraiva Souza et al.

Summary: The study estimated meteorological and agricultural drought in different climatic regions of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using satellite data, with a focus on the Soil Moisture Agricultural Drought Index (SMADI). Results showed that SMADI could provide early warning of drought impacts on rainfed agricultural systems and was more sensitive to identifying water stress in sorghum crops compared to other indices.

Summary: The study quantified the sensitivity of vegetation photosynthesis to drought, showing different responses to drought across bioclimatic zones, with grasslands responding quickest and strongest, while forests were the least responsive. The findings highlight the need for prompt assessment of drought impacts on vegetation photosynthesis in regions experiencing increasing dryness under global warming.

Performance and relationship of four different agricultural drought indices for drought monitoring in China's mainland using remote sensing data

Tehseen Javed et al.

Summary: Increasing frequency and intensity of extreme drought events have harmful effects on the environment, ecosystem, and agricultural productivity. This study utilized remote sensing data to derive various drought indices and found that MSDI showed better performance for monitoring agricultural drought in China's mainland. The temporal patterns of VHI anomaly were similar to relative soil moisture and slightly different from precipitation, with MSDI showing the best spatial match with VHI.

Seasonal and aridity influences on the relationships between drought indices and hydrological variables over China

Hao-jie Xu et al.

Summary: In recent years, multiple drought indices have been developed to quantify drought characteristics and examine drought effects. Our study found that SPI and SPEI are better at characterizing meteorological drought at the seasonal timescale, while scPDSI is more suitable for agricultural drought monitoring. However, all three indices showed worse performances in quantifying drought trend and magnitude in drier regions and seasons characterized by a low aridity index.

Evaluating the performance of eight drought indices for capturing soil moisture dynamics in various vegetation regions over China

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of eight drought indices in capturing soil moisture dynamics in different vegetation coverage types of China. Results showed that DSI and ESI had the best overall performance. Factors such as time lag effect, climate conditions, and soil moisture data uncertainties impacted the performance of these indices in both arable and non-arable regions. Abnormalities in dry and wet edges fitting may affect the performance of TVDI. The study provides insights for improving existing drought indices and developing new ones.

Summary: This study used remote sensing technology and meteorological data to analyze drought conditions in the Yellow River Basin. The results show that reconstructed temperature and vegetation indices can improve the accuracy of drought monitoring, different drought indices show consistency in spatial and temporal patterns but differences in some local areas, and drought level in the Yellow River Basin is highest in the northwest and lowest in the southwest and southeast, remaining stable from 2003 to 2019.

The Added-Value of Remotely-Sensed Soil Moisture Data for Agricultural Drought Detection in Argentina

Mercedes M. Salvia et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of the satellite-based soil moisture agricultural drought index (SMADI) for agricultural drought detection in Argentina, comparing it with other indices. SMADI showed the best overall performance and suitability for an early warning system. SSMA had the lowest FPR but also the lowest TPR, making it unsuitable for an alert system. Field precipitation-based indices were not suitable for agricultural drought detection in Argentina.
