Osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells on substituted calcium phosphate/chitosan composite scaffold

Antonia Ressler et al.

Summary: Ionic substitutions in composite materials have shown promising potential in enhancing the biological performance for bone tissue engineering applications. This study focused on multi-substituted organic/inorganic scaffolds and demonstrated that these scaffolds have high stability and can promote osteogenic potential of human mesenchymal stem cells. Results highlighted the beneficial effect of ionic substitutions on cells and tissues.

A biocomplex to repair experimental critical size defects associated with photobiomodulation therapy

Daniela Vieira Buchaim et al.

Summary: This experiment evaluated the effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) on critical size defects filled with xenogenic bone substitute associated with fibrin biopolymer. The results showed that PBM therapy improved the formation of new bone and promoted the organized deposition of collagen fibers in the defect area. Additionally, the use of biocomplex helped in the insertion and permanence of the particulate material in bone defects, creating a favorable microenvironment to accelerate the repair process.

Innovative Concepts and Recent Breakthrough for Engineered Graft and Constructs for Bone Regeneration: A Literature Systematic Review

Francesco Inchingolo et al.

Summary: This review evaluates recent innovations in bone regeneration, focusing on the healing potential and clinical protocols of bone substitutes combined with engineered constructs, growth factors, and photobiomodulation applications. The study suggests that the use of biocompatible and bio-resorbable bone substitutes improves the predictability of bone regeneration procedures. Furthermore, the oral microbiota and systemic health of the patient are crucial for the long-term success of regeneration procedures and implant-supported restorations. The use of growth factors reduces complications and improves post-operative healing, while photobiomodulation can enhance soft and hard tissue response for bone regeneration.

Dayane Maria Braz Nogueira et al.

Summary: The experiment aimed to evaluate the biological behavior of two xenogenic scaffolds in alcohol-induced rats with tibia defects. Results showed that both biomaterials promoted bone formation, with Bio-Oss((R)) being superior to OrthoGen((R)), while alcohol intake had a negative impact on the healing process and new bone formation.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of administering photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) with bovine bone matrix on critical size defects in rats. The results showed that groups L and C had the highest proportion of neoformation, while groups B and B+L had larger defect size. In terms of immunohistochemistry, groups B and B+L had higher immunostaining scores for OPG and RANKL at 60 days.
