Rational design of biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethanes for tissue repair

Cancan Xu et al.

Summary: This article comprehensively summarizes the synthesis, structures, and properties of biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethanes, and introduces their multiple applications in tissue repair and regeneration. These polyurethanes have excellent processing flexibilities and mimic the mechanical properties of soft and elastic tissues, and can be combined with biomolecules to incorporate desired bioactivities.

Essential oils loaded-chitosan nanocapsules incorporation in biodegradable starch films: A strategy to improve fruits shelf life

Rafaela R. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic starch films filled with chitosan nanocapsules containing essential oils were studied for active packaging. Strong interaction between chitosan and starch was observed, and the addition of nanocapsules decreased water permeability while exhibiting antimicrobial activity. These films have the potential for use in food packaging, biomedical, or pharmaceutical applications.

Isolation of a soil bacterium for remediation of polyurethane and low-density polyethylene: a promising tool towards sustainable cleanup of the environment

Rusha Roy et al.

Summary: Strain AKS31 isolated from soil showed potential in degrading polyurethane and low-density polyethylene, with indications of esterase and hydroxylase activities. Microcosm studies demonstrated that AKS31 bioaugmentation improved soil health by degrading plastic microbeads. Further research in this direction is recommended.

Bioresorbable electrospun mats of poly(D, L)-lactide/poly[(R, S)-3-hydroxybutyrate] blends for potential use in the treatment of difficult-to-heal skin wounds

Magdalena Zieba et al.

Summary: This study utilized proanthocyanidins extracted from Pelargonium sidoides to prepare polymeric delivery systems with antimicrobial activity for potential use as wound dressings. Biodegradable dressings were constructed using poly(D,L-lactide) and atactic poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate], and P(D,L)LA/a-PHB blends were characterized and tested for PCAN release and cytotoxicity, demonstrating their potential application in wound dressings.

Assessment of the economic recycling potential of a glycolysis treatment of rigid polyurethane foam waste: A case study from Thailand

Premrudee Kanchanapiya et al.

Summary: This study conducted in Thailand showed that recovering polyol from rigid polyurethane foam waste using domestic crude glycerol as a transesterification agent is economically feasible, with attractive investment returns and payback period. Sensitivity analysis revealed the economic feasibility is most sensitive to the price of the recovered polyol, followed by the amount of waste and prices of machinery, crude glycerol, and stannous octoate.

Microbial and abiotic degradation of fully aliphatic polyurethane foam suitable for biotechnologies

Olga Trhlikova et al.

Summary: The study found that fully aliphatic PUR foam exhibits significant degradability in microbial degradation, with good biodegradation performance in soil. These results demonstrate that a biologically active PUR foam can be successfully prepared for applications requiring material bioactivity such as biorecycling.

Degradability of Polyurethanes and Their Blends with Polylactide, Chitosan and Starch

Joanna Brzeska et al.

Summary: The study found that PUR samples with a higher amount of R,S-PHB and a lower amount of polycaprolactone triol (PCLtriol) degraded the most, with blending with starch (St) having the greatest impact on degradation susceptibility. Although the rate of weight loss of the samples was low, significant reductions in molecular weight, changes in morphology, and thermal property changes indicated that the samples would degrade quickly after a certain period of time.

Starch-based isocyanate- and non-isocyanate polyurethane hybrids: A review on synthesis, performance and biodegradation

Nyok Ling Tai et al.

Summary: Starch has garnered significant interest in the development of biodegradable bioplastics due to its impressive physicochemical properties when used in polyurethane (PU) composites. Despite the hydrophilic nature of starch limiting its dispersion in hydrophobic PU matrices, strategies are being developed to improve compatibility and enhance the biodegradation characteristics of the final PU products. Advances in the synthesis of starch-NIPU hybrids are also being explored to further boost biodegradability of PUs.

Fully biodegradable polylactide foams with ultrahigh expansion ratio and heat resistance for green packaging

Peng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, long chain branching (LCB) structures were efficiently introduced into polylactide (PLA) using sustainable soybean oil (SO), leading to improved foamability, heat resistance, and accelerated hydrolytic degradation. The addition of SO significantly increased the amount of LCB structures in PLA, resulting in enhanced melting strength and crystallization performance. Furthermore, PLA foam trays with light weight and good heat resistance were successfully developed, offering a green alternative to non-degradable oil-based plastics in disposable packaging products.
