Elucidation of the Effect of Fast Pyrolysis and Hydrothermal Liquefaction on the Physico-chemical Properties of Bio-oil from Southern Yellow Pine Biomass as a Chemical Feedstock

Osei A. Asafu-Adjaye et al.

Summary: This study investigated bio-oils obtained from southern yellow pine biomass through fast pyrolysis (FP) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The physical and chemical properties of the bio-oils were characterized, and variations in composition were observed. Esterified compounds were prevalent in HTL bio-oil, while phenols and phenolic derivatives were found in both bio-oils. Phosphorous nuclear magnetic resonance analysis further revealed the presence of phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups in both FP and HTL bio-oils.

Synthesis of Biobased Novolac Phenol-Formaldehyde Wood Adhesives from Biorefinery-Derived Lignocellulosic Biomass

Archana Bansode et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of lignin and bio-oils as substitutes for phenol in wood adhesives, with lignin from kraft biorefinery showing potential as a substitute in the novolac phenol-formaldehyde resin system. Results indicated significantly different adhesion abilities of the tested adhesives, with 50-NPF-L-KB adhesive demonstrating the highest tensile shear strength compared to other tested adhesives.
