Progress in quantitative analysis of microplastics in the environment: A review

Sungyup Jung et al.

Summary: The increase in plastics released into the environment has raised concerns, with current spectroscopic tools being the main method for identifying and measuring microplastics. However, accuracy decreases as particle size decreases. The emergence of pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Pyro-GC/MS) technology provides a new method for the identification and quantification of microplastics.

Litter impacts on marine birds: The Mediterranean Northern gannet as case study

Luciano Massetti et al.

Summary: Litter is prevalent in coastal and marine environments, posing a threat to seabirds' mortality. The study focused on the litter content and impacts on gannet nests in South France and Northwest Italy, revealing a high percentage of man-made items like nautical cordage. Strict litter management regulations are necessary to reduce litter generation from fishing and aquaculture activities.

Anthropocene, the plastic age and future perspectives

Raffaele Porta

Summary: The issue of plastic waste has become a major topic on the international agenda due to the inability to effectively manage the increasing quantity of plastic materials produced. Various initiatives, including legal regulations, have been introduced to reduce plastic waste, but decisions to limit production or use of plastics are inevitably influenced by economic evaluations and the shortcomings of alternative materials.

Plastics in marine ecosystem: A review of their sources and pollution conduits

Md. Simul Bhuyan et al.

Summary: Oceanic marine plastic contamination is a growing global issue impacting marine biodiversity, public safety, and causing various infectious diseases. Plastics are widely distributed along coasts and mid-ocean areas, entering the human body through the food chain and causing significant harm. Recent attention from the scientific community and policymakers highlights the importance of enhancing monitoring and control of plastic pollution.
