Optimization of Microwave Assisted Extraction Conditions to Improve Phenolic Content and In Vitro Antioxidant and Anti-Microbial Activity in Quercus cerris Bark Extracts

Adrian Nisca et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical characteristics and potential biological activities of Quercus cerris bark extracts obtained by optimizing the parameters of microwave assisted extraction (MAE). The results showed that both aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts exhibited high antioxidant and antibacterial activities, with different optimal extraction conditions.

Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oils and Hydroethanolic Extracts of Greek Oregano (O. vulgare L. subsp. hirtum (Link) Ietswaart) and Common Oregano (O. vulgare L. subsp. vulgare)

Olga Kosakowska et al.

Summary: The study compared the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Greek oregano and common oregano essential oils and extracts, revealing differences in chemical composition and activity between the two subspecies. Both subspecies showed different chemotypes based on volatile compounds, with Greek oregano having stronger antibacterial activity but similar antioxidant potential as common oregano. Proper identification and recognition of chemotypes should be considered when using essential oils and extracts of Origanum plants as antiseptic and antioxidant agents in the food industry.

Vibrational Spectroscopic Analyses and Imaging of the Early Middle Ages Hemp Bast Fibres Recovered from Lake Sediments

Grzegorz Kalisz et al.

Summary: FT-IR spectroscopy and HCA were used to analyze the biochemical properties of Early Middle Ages hemp fibers, showing the highest lignin and pectin content in untreated fibers. By mimicking retting conditions, it was found that the sample processed at 37 degrees Celsius had the highest amide content, indicating the highest degree of enzymatic degradation.

Optimized microwave-assisted extraction of polyphenols and tannins from Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels leaves through an experimental design coupled to a desirability approach

Caio C. A. R. Silva et al.

Summary: The present study optimized the extractive method of polyphenols and total tannins of Syzygium cumini (L) Skeels leaves using microwaves, enhancing the antimicrobial activity of the extract against sensitive and resistant strains. A Box-Behnken design with 27 experimental runs was used to optimize the extraction, resulting in a total polyphenol content of 87.37 +/- 1.85 mg TAE g(-1) ext and a total tannin content of 79.68 +/- 1.64 mg TAE g(-1) ext, with all tested microorganisms showing sensitivity to the extract.
