Butylated hydroxyl-toluene, 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol, and phytol of Chlorella sp. protect the PC12 cell line against H2O2-induced neurotoxicity

Saeed Niazi Vahdati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant properties of microalgae extracts from the Persian Gulf, particularly focusing on the potential neuroprotective effects of Chlorella sp. extract D1M. The results showed that D1M exhibited strong antioxidant activity, reducing oxidative stress in PC12 cells and potentially serving as a candidate for neuroprotective therapy. The compounds within D1M were found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting a promising application in treating neurodegenerative disorders.

Analysis of Electro-Optical Behavior in Liquid Crystal Cells with Asymmetric Anchoring Strength

Rumiko Yamaguchi

Summary: This study numerically analyzed the liquid crystal director distributions between asymmetric anchoring surfaces, finding that the liquid crystal orientations turn to a homogeneous orientation when weak anchoring strength is lower than a critical value. The relationship between the anchoring strength and elastic constants of the liquid crystal showed quasi-homogeneous orientation. Under voltage application, the quasi-homogeneous orientation returned to the original orientations.

Vertical Orientation of Liquid Crystal on 4-n-Alkyloxyphenoxymethyl-Substituted Polystyrene Containing Liquid Crystal Precursor

Kyutae Seo et al.

Summary: A series of polystyrene derivatives modified with liquid crystal precursors were synthesized to investigate the orientation of LC molecules on polymer films, showing stable and uniform vertical orientation in LC cells fabricated with polymers containing a specific molar fraction of 4-ethyloxyphenoxymethyl. This study found that the vertical orientation of LC molecules in LC cells correlated with the surface energy of polymer films, and good alignment stability was observed under certain conditions.

Alignment Layer of Liquid Crystal Using Plant-Based Isoeugenol-Substituted Polystyrene

DaEun Yang et al.

Summary: A series of renewable and plant-based isoeugenol-substituted polystyrenes were synthesized to study their liquid crystal alignment behavior, showing that higher molar content of isoeugenol side groups resulted in vertical LC alignment. The surface energy value of the polymer layer played a key role in determining the alignment behavior. Good alignment stability was observed at high temperature and under UV irradiation for LC cells fabricated using PIEU100, demonstrating the potential of renewable isoeugenol-based materials in producing eco-friendly vertical LC alignment systems.

Vertical Orientation of Liquid Crystal on Comb-Like 4-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenoxymethyl-substituted Polystyrene Containing Liquid Crystal Precursor

Kyutae Seo et al.

Summary: By modifying polystyrene derivatives with liquid crystal precursors, the orientation of liquid crystal (LC) molecules on polymer films was investigated. Stable and uniform vertical orientation of LC molecules was observed in LC cells with specific molar fractions of side groups, and water contact angle on polymer films was linked to the LC molecules' vertical orientation. Good orientation stability was observed in LC cells fabricated with PECH films under specific conditions.

Fabiana Volpe-Zanutto et al.

Summary: Artemether (ART) and lumefantrine (LUM) are commonly used antimalarial drugs, typically administered orally. However, a new surfactant-based ART-LUM formulation (S3AL) has shown potential for transdermal delivery, improving drug bioavailability and skin adhesion. The addition of LUM to the formulation changed its structure and showed biocompatibility with human keratinocyte cells.

A chiral-racemic lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal system

Jordan K. Ando et al.

Summary: Liquid crystals are divided into thermotropic and lyotropic classes, both of which can form nematic phases with preferred orientation. The addition of chiral molecules can induce a chiral nematic phase. Research has shown that the properties of nematic phases can differ significantly between the two classes due to the difference in ordering entities.
