Large-Scale Multi-omic Analysis of COVID-19 Severity

Katherine A. Overmyer et al.

Summary: The study conducted RNA-seq and high-resolution mass spectrometry on blood samples from COVID-19-positive and COVID-19-negative patients, identifying molecular features associated with disease severity and outcomes, offering pathophysiological insights and therapeutic suggestions. The observed dysregulation of platelet function, blood coagulation, acute phase response, and endotheliopathy further illuminated the unique COVID-19 phenotype. The findings are presented through a web-based tool enabling interactive exploration and machine learning prediction of COVID-19 severity.

Sweet talk: Metabolic conversations between host and microbe during infection

Eyal Amiel et al.

Summary: In this issue, a series of reviews on how immunometabolism influences host and pathogen interactions during infection is introduced, focusing on the interface between metabolism and specific types of infection. Together with previously published articles, these reviews offer new insights into the complex interactions between mammalian hosts and microbial pathogens through the lens of cellular metabolic regulation.

Summary: When viruses infect cells, they cause metabolic changes in both the infected and host cells, providing potential targets for therapeutic approaches. The immune system response also involves metabolic changes. The consequences of viral infections may differ in patients with metabolic problems.

Burden of noninfluenza respiratory viral infections in adults admitted to hospital: analysis of a multiyear Canadian surveillance cohort from 2 centres

Nelson Lee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the data of hospitalized adult patients with noninfluenza respiratory virus infections in two regions of Canada over three consecutive seasons. The burden of NIRV infections in this population was found to be substantial, with outcomes similar to influenza. Age > 60 years, immunocompromised state, and hospital-acquired viral infection were associated with worse outcomes.
