Assessing critical gaps in COVID-19 testing capacity: the case of delayed results in Ecuador

Irene Torres et al.

Summary: This study found that a centralized RT-PCR testing system in Ecuador contributed to critical delays in processing, potentially masking a higher case burden than reported. Although some provinces had authorized COVID-19 processing laboratories, there is a need to estimate and augment laboratory capacities for improved decision-making and policies. Support is needed for necessary human and physical resources, as well as transportation of samples and supplies, and information management, at all phases of diagnostic testing.
