Identification of QTL and underlying genes for root system architecture associated with nitrate nutrition in hexaploid wheat

Marcus Griffiths et al.

Summary: The genetic basis of root system architecture and resource adaptive responses in wheat was studied using a high-throughput germination paper-based plant phenotyping system and quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. Significant genotypic and nitrate-N treatment variation was found for seedling traits, and a total of 59 seedling trait QTLs were identified. Transcriptomic analysis revealed gene enrichment in N-related biological processes and differentially expressed genes related to root angle response. These findings provide genetic insight into root system architecture and plant adaptive responses, and offer targets for improving nitrogen capture in wheat.

Genetic dissection of wheat uppermost-internode diameter and its association with agronomic traits in five recombinant inbred line populations at various field environments

LIU Hang et al.

Summary: This study identified 25 QTLs associated with uppermost-internode diameter (UID) in five wheat recombinant inbred line populations, with five major and stable QTLs identified across multiple environments. The study also identified novel QTLs and investigated markers linked to them for developing near-isogenic lines (NILs). Candidate genes related to plant development and water transportation were predicted, and the study confirmed the effectiveness of major QTLs by comparing their physical locations on the reference genome. Discussions regarding the relationships between UID and other agronomic traits were also provided, laying a foundation for further fine mapping and map-based cloning of these QTLs.

QTL mapping of seedling biomass and root traits under different nitrogen conditions in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Yang Meng-jiao et al.

Summary: This study utilized 198 doubled haploid lines from a wheat cross to identify QTLs related to root traits and nitrogen uptake. Significant correlations were observed, and 12 new QTLs influencing root and biomass traits were discovered.
