Location-dependent effect of nickel on hydrogen dissociation and diffusion on Mg (0001) surface: Insights into hydrogen storage material design

Zongying Han et al.

Summary: This study performed Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogen dissociation and diffusion on the Mg (0001) surface with Ni incorporation at different locations. The results revealed that the Ni atom prefers to locate inside the Mg matrix rather than on or over the topmost surface. Further calculations showed that the Ni atom located on or over the topmost Mg (0001) surface exhibits an excellent catalytic effect on hydrogen dissociation with a low energy barrier. However, Ni doping inside the Mg bulk not only has little effect on hydrogen dissociation but also hinders hydrogen diffusion. Therefore, stabilizing the Ni atom on the surface or in the topmost layer of the Mg (0001) surface is crucial to maintain its catalytic effect. For all the cases of Ni-incorporated Mg (0001) surfaces, the hydrogen atom prefers to migrate along the surface before penetrating into the bulk. It is expected that the theoretical findings in this study can provide fundamental guidance for the future design of efficient Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.

Mulch-assisted ambient-air synthesis of oxygen-rich activated carbon for hydrogen storage: A combined experimental and theoretical case study

Zongying Han et al.

Summary: A method for synthesizing oxygen-rich activated carbon without inert gas has been developed in this study, which involves simple mixing and high temperature treatment under ambient atmosphere. The activated carbon produced through this method exhibits high specific surface area and hydrogen storage density, and is potentially applicable to various precursors, offering a low-cost synthesis pathway for functional carbon materials.

Recycling iron from oolitic hematite via microwave fluidization roasting and magnetic separation

Wentao Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a clean and innovative microwave fluidization roasting method was developed to recover iron resources from oolitic hematite. The microwave pretreatment promoted the formation of microcracks at mineral interfaces, accelerating the reaction and phase transformation during magnetization roasting. The iron mineral phase was selectively transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite, and the iron mineral was effectively recycled from the roasted samples through magnetic separation.

The application and mechanism of high-efficiency depressant Na2ATP on the selective separation of cassiterite from fluorite by direct flotation

Xun Wang et al.

Summary: In order to achieve efficient flotation separation of cassiterite from fluorite, a eco-friendly depressant, Na(2)ATP, was used to selectively depress fluorite. Micro-flotation experiments showed that Na(2)ATP significantly depressed the flotation of fluorite compared to cassiterite, and the mechanism of selective depression was revealed through surface analyses. Na(2)ATP proved to be a suitable high-efficiency depressant for the separation of cassiterite from fluorite by direct flotation.
