Boundary conditions representation can determine simulated aerosol effects on convective cloud fields

Guy Dagan et al.

Summary: The impact of aerosols on clouds remains uncertain in climate predictions. The evolution of cloud properties is influenced by both the clouds themselves and the environmental conditions, and aerosol-driven changes in cloud properties can feedback to the evolution of the environment. The representation of boundary conditions in models strongly affects the simulated response of the environment to aerosol perturbations.

Opportunistic experiments to constrain aerosol effective radiative forcing

Matthew W. Christensen et al.

Summary: Aerosol-cloud interactions are the most uncertain driver of radiative forcing due to human activities. Opportunistic experiments provide a way to investigate these interactions and improve assessments of aerosol radiative forcing and climate change.

Clouds, radiation, and atmospheric circulation in the present-day climate and under climate change

Aiko Voigt et al.

Summary: The interaction between clouds and radiation plays a significant role in influencing the atmospheric circulation, internal variability, and response to climate change. Factors such as cloud-controlling factors and cloud-radiative effects affect the present-day climate. Models like COOKIE and cloud-locking methods help understand these impacts on the circulation and variability. Differences in shortwave and longwave cloud impacts contribute to model variations in response to global warming.

Aerosol-cloud-climate cooling overestimated by ship-track data

Franziska Glassmeier et al.

Summary: In frequently occurring nonprecipitating stratocumulus, cloud amount can decrease through aerosol-enhanced cloud-top mixing. However, ship exhaust only marginally reduces stratocumulus amount, and ship track studies cannot accurately estimate the radiative effect of nonprecipitating stratocumulus to aerosol. The offsetting warming effect of decreasing stratocumulus amount needs to be considered in order to better understand the cloud-mediated radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosol.

Forcing Convection to Aggregate Using Diabatic Heating Perturbations

Beth Dingley et al.

Summary: The study shows that the anomalous diabatic heating of the atmospheric column through an aerosol plume can increase the degree of aggregation of tropical deep convection, especially at lower sea surface temperatures. The mechanism of convective aggregation varies at different sea surface temperatures, with longwave feedback playing a crucial role in the aggregation process.

Observational constraints on low cloud feedback reduce uncertainty of climate sensitivity

Timothy A. Myers et al.

Summary: Marine low clouds play a significant role in cooling the planet, with observational constraints indicating a moderate climate sensitivity. Current climate models show improved simulation of midlatitude cloud feedback, but errors in trade cumulus feedback can lead to unrealistic climate sensitivities.
