L-Arginine and Beetroot Extract Supplementation in the Prevention of Sarcopenia

Alfredo Cordova-Martinez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of L-arginine and beetroot extract supplementation on muscular function during a 6-week training period in elderly men and women. The results showed that beetroot supplementation protected muscle functionality in women by decreasing levels of creatine kinase, while supplementation with L-arginine and beetroot extract did not have significant effects on strength, endurance, and SPPB index. Beetroot extract supplementation improved physical fitness in sprint exercise in men after the 6-week intervention.

Vitamin D and Its Role in the Lipid Metabolism and the Development of Atherosclerosis

Andrei Mihai Surdu et al.

Summary: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health by influencing lipid levels, vascular tone, and atherosclerosis development. Deficiency of this vitamin increases cardiovascular risk, while supplementation has the potential to lower the risk factors.

L-Citrulline Supplementation and Exercise in the Management of Sarcopenia

Alberto Caballero-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study found that citrulline supplementation significantly improved walking speed in elderly participants engaged in physical activity, with no significant differences in strength and endurance improvement. After supplementation, markers of muscle damage and hormone levels showed a tendency to improve compared to the placebo group.

Sex-Specific Differences in the Effect of Free Testosterone on Sarcopenia Components in Older Adults

Hyung Eun Shin et al.

Summary: The study found that there is an association between free testosterone (FT) levels and sarcopenia in elderly men and women, with low FT levels potentially linked to decreases in muscle strength in women and declines in physical performance in men. However, no significant correlation was found between FT levels and loss of muscle mass.

Altered Ca2+ Handling and Oxidative Stress Underlie Mitochondrial Damage and Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction in Aging and Disease

Antonio Michelucci et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of Ca2+ signaling and ATP generation in skeletal muscle contraction and outlines the role of impaired Ca2+ handling, dysfunctional ROS/RNS production, and structural/functional alterations in CRUs and mitochondria in various muscle disorders. Understanding these processes is crucial for identifying potential therapeutic targets to prevent or reverse muscle dysfunction in aging and disease.
