MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in the 21st century clinical microbiology laboratory

Marina Oviano et al.

Summary: MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry has become a reference method for routine bacterial isolates identification in clinical microbiology laboratories worldwide due to its high specificity, user-friendly interface, cost-efficiency, and rapid reliable results in less than 5 minutes. The technology has advanced to identify a wider range of microbial species, including non-tuberculous mycobacteria, Nocardia spp., yeasts, and filamentous fungi. This expertise has also led to the development of a MALDI-TOF-based methodology for detecting different antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, with potential future applications in bacterial strain typing and virulence markers detection.

Bacterial Pathogens and Their Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Inanimate Surfaces and Equipment in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Teklehaimanot Kiros et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance patterns on inanimate surfaces and equipment in Ethiopia. The results showed a high prevalence of bacterial contamination on these surfaces and equipment, with particularly high rates of resistance among Klebsiella pneumoniae and Citrobacter species.

High Carbapenem Resistance Caused by VIM and NDM Enzymes and OprD Alteration in Nonfermenter Bacteria Isolated from a Libyan Hospital

Khouloud Slimene et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa isolates from a Libyan hospital, identifying the dissemination of bla(OXA-23) and bla(NDM-1) genes. Infection prevention and control practices should be implemented to prevent the wide spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Summary: The study revealed a high level of bacterial contamination on patient-care equipment and inanimate objects in selected wards of Arba Minch General Hospital, Ethiopia. The bacterial isolates showed diversity and high levels of antibiotic resistance, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive infection control program.
