Evaluation of genotoxic damage in buccal mucosa cytome assays in Iraqi school children exposed to air pollutants emanating from oil fields

Jinan Tuma Sabah

Summary: The Al-ahdeb oil fields in Iraq extract over 135 thousand barrels of crude oil daily, releasing millions of gallons of untreated toxic wastes into the environment, posing potential health risks to children living nearby. Analysis of buccal mucosa cells showed significantly elevated nuclear anomalies in children living near the oil-field, indicating an elevated risk of genetic damage and detrimental health effects in the future.
