Design of a zero liquid discharge leachate treatment system using an evapotranspiration willow bed

Chloe Fredette et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the feasibility of applying zero liquid discharge wetland technology to industrial leachate treatment. Through detailed hydrological modeling, the study investigates the impacts of design and management decisions on the scale, efficiency, and feasibility of the technology. The results show that considering evapotranspiration optimization factors is crucial for achieving zero discharge in a humid climate.

Short-Rotation Willows as a Wastewater Treatment Plant: Biomass Production and the Fate of Macronutrients and Metals

Darja Istenic et al.

Summary: The study examined the performance of Evapotranspirative willow systems (EWS) in wastewater treatment and biomass production, finding that willow clones in EWS significantly outperformed controls in terms of woody biomass production, with 'V 052' yielding the highest biomass. All clones showed significantly higher absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater compared to other plant-based wastewater treatment plants, demonstrating the nutrient recovery potential of EWS. However, an increase in salinity in the wastewater after a period of operation could potentially impact the long-term efficiency and nutrient recovery of EWS.

Biomass Production and Removal of Nitrogen and Phosphorus from Processed Municipal Wastewater by Salix schwerinii: A Field Trial

Muhammad Mohsin et al.

Summary: The study showed that willow trees grown with processed wastewater irrigation had significantly increased growth and biomass production, as well as improved capability to uptake nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. Compared to the control group, willow trees under wastewater irrigation demonstrated a higher survival rate.

Wastewater Treatment and Wood Production of Willow System in Cold Climate

Ganbaatar Khurelbaatar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of seasonal operational changes on wastewater treatment performance in a short rotation forestry system under extreme winter conditions in Mongolia. External winter storage was found to significantly improve treatment efficiency compared to internal storage, with both systems showing high biomass yield with slight differences. Based on the results, design recommendations for full-scale systems were developed, demonstrating the viability of using short rotation coppice for wastewater treatment and biomass production for energy in Mongolia.
