Estimating the most effective and economical pheromone for monitoring the European spruce bark beetle

Nina Sramel et al.

Summary: The study tested five commercially available pheromone lures for monitoring Ips typographus outbreaks in Europe, with IT Ecolure Extra (R), Ipsowit (R), and Pheroprax (R) showing the best effectiveness. The cost of pheromones is relatively low compared to personnel costs. An index was created to assess the cost-efficiency of the pheromones, providing guidelines for future research in selecting the right pheromone for monitoring bark beetle populations.

Evaluation of Attractant Composition, Application Rate, and Trap Type for Potential Mass Trapping of Ips typographus (L.)

Tobias Heber et al.

Summary: This study focused on improving trapping methods for Ips typographus and found that Typosan(R) was significantly more effective, especially for adult beetles after hibernation. Increasing the application rate of Pheroprax(R) only slightly increased the catch of I. typographus, while the catch of Thanasimus spp. increased substantially. Different trap types showed species-specific catching capabilities, with the 12-funnel WitaTrap(R) being the most effective for catching I. typographus.

Felled and Lure Trap Trees with Uncut Branches Are Only Weakly Attractive to the Double-Spined Bark Beetle, Ips duplicatus

Vojtech Sotola et al.

Summary: The study found that trap trees with a pheromone evaporator can be used to capture Ips duplicatus, especially in forests containing high numbers of the beetles.

Is the double-spined bark beetle Ips duplicatus a new threat to Picea omorika in urban habitats?

Jozef Vaklila et al.

Summary: The study found that the invasive forest pest Ips duplicatus can also develop in the Serbian spruce, posing a threat to this ornamental tree. Laboratory testing showed a high prevalence of Ips duplicatus in logs from the upper part of Serbian spruce stems.

Improvement of Ips typographus catches in pheromone trap barriers by altering of sex assigned pheromone blends

Miroslav Blazenec et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of pheromone trap barriers with different pheromone mixtures to target males and females separately, aiming to increase catch efficacy and reduce dispersion of attracted bark beetles. Results showed that the combination of mixtures targeting males and females had the highest catch rate and lowest dispersal, proving to be effective in reducing the risk of attack on trees.
