Influence of Pliocene and Pleistocene climates on hybridization patterns between two closely related oak species in China

Yao Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between present admixture patterns of two East Asian Cerris oaks and past climatic niche suitability, finding that paleoclimate change shapes present admixture patterns by influencing historical range overlap. Specifically, the mid-Pliocene warm climate promoted ancient contact and widespread hybridization, while the Pleistocene cool climate limited interspecific gene flow except in areas with high ecological stability.

Conservation of woody species in China under future climate and land-cover changes

Shijia Peng et al.

Summary: Future climate and land-cover changes will have significant impacts on the conservation status of woody species and the effectiveness of PAs in China. Threatened species tend to be clustered in the tree of life and the SR and PD of threatened species within PAs will decrease, especially in PAs at low elevations and those with low topographic heterogeneity. China should consider the influences of future global changes on biodiversity conservation priorities, especially in regions such as mountains in southern China, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and Taiwan Island.

Modeling the Climate Suitability of Northernmost Mangroves in China under Climate Change Scenarios

Yuyu Wang et al.

Summary: Mangroves are important wetland ecosystems on tropical and subtropical coasts. This study used a maximum entropy model and land-use data to predict suitable areas for the northernmost mangroves in China in the 2050s. The results showed that the northern edge of the natural mangrove distribution in China would migrate northward, and the total extent of suitable mangrove habitats would expand. However, the expansion of mangroves may be restricted by adjacent aquacultural ponds, cultivated, and artificial land.

Quantitative Evaluation of Ecological Stress Caused by Land Use Transitions Considering the Location of Incremental Construction Lands: The Case of Southern Jiangsu in Yangtze River Delta Region

Pingxing Li et al.

Summary: Land use transitions have become a focus in land change science and sustainability science due to their significance in connecting socio-economic development and related eco-environmental consequences. This study examined the ecological stress of construction lands in economically developed and highly urbanized southern Jiangsu in Eastern China. The results showed that the majority of incremental construction lands had high ecological stress levels and were mainly located in areas along the Yangtze River and around Taihu Lake. The study highlights the importance of considering the spatial distribution of construction lands in planning land use transitions.

The Use of Tree-Related Microhabitats as Forest Biodiversity Indicators and to Guide Integrated Forest Management

Thomas Asbeck et al.

Summary: The concept of tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) is increasingly implemented in Europe and applied in other contexts. Tree species, dimensions, and live status are main drivers of TreM occurrence. TreMs are not a comprehensive indicator of biodiversity in forest dwelling species, but they serve as an important tool for guiding the selection of habitat trees for conservation purposes.

Patterns of tree species richness in Southwest China

Shuangfei Lu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the response of tree species richness to climate change in southwest China and found that as temperatures rise, tree species tend to migrate towards higher elevations. Climate factors and elevation were identified as the most critical factors affecting tree species richness.

The Potential for Future Shifts in Tree Species Distribution Provided by Dispersal and Ecological Niches: A Comparison between Beech and Oak in Europe

Maximilian Axer et al.

Summary: The study found that there are differences in the regeneration distribution of European beech and European oak compared to their overstorey distribution, with oak regeneration expanding in the cold-wet range and beech regeneration decreasing in the dry-warm range. While oak has a higher dispersal potential than beech, many areas cannot be colonized despite climatic suitability due to large dispersal distances.

Is the Seasonal Variation in Frost Resistance and Plant Performance in Four Oak Species Affected by Changing Temperatures?

Summary: Seasonal variation in frost resistance and plant performance, influenced by growth temperature, was found in the study. This contributes to a better understanding of ecophysiological processes in the context of climate change.

Predicting range shifts of pikas (Mammalia, Ochotonidae) in China under scenarios incorporating land use change, climate change and dispersal limitations

Liang Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impacts of land use change (LUC) and global climate change (GCC) on the ranges of five pika species in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau region, finding that incorporating dispersal limitations notably alters predicted future distributions of species. While three of the species are projected to increase occupied habitat by 2080 relative to current ranges, all five species experience a net loss of occupied habitat by 2080 under some or all projections compared to a Dispersal Only baseline scenario.

Spatial-Temporal Changes and Driving Force Analysis of Green Space in Coastal Cities of Southeast China over the Past 20 Years

Huayan Weng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial-temporal changes and driving factors of green space in coastal cities of southeast China over the past 20 years. The results showed that anthropogenic factors have played a significant role in the changes of green space, with their contribution continually increasing compared to geographical environmental factors.
