Sustainable non-isocyanate polyurethanes bio-adhesives for engineered wood panels are revealed as promising candidates to move from formaldehyde-based alternatives

Ana Arias et al.

Summary: The development of eco-friendly wood adhesives is mainly driven by factors such as environmental sustainability, cost savings, recyclability, reusability, and health benefits compared to synthetic resins. By evaluating the technical performance of bio-based alternatives compared to formaldehyde-based resins, the environmental profiles of the products need to be assessed to determine the pros and cons. Results showed that OSL-NIPU and SPI-NIPU bio-adhesives have the best environmental profiles, potentially serving as substitutes for synthetic resins.

Characteristics of beech bark and its effect on properties of UF adhesive and on bonding strength and formaldehyde emission of plywood panels

Pavlo Bekhta et al.

Summary: The study found that beech bark can effectively reduce formaldehyde emissions and improve bonding strength in plywood manufacturing. Adding 5 wt% bark resulted in the highest formaldehyde absorption and best bonding strength. Additionally, plywood panels with all investigated bark concentrations met the requirements of the EN 314-2 standard for bonding strength.
