Presence of birth companion - a deterrent to disrespectful behaviours towards women during delivery: an exploratory mixed-method study in 18 public hospitals of India

Shalini Singh et al.

Summary: This study conducted in 18 tertiary health care facilities in India revealed that the practice of birth companionship is not common in public hospitals, with reasons including lack of hospital policy, space constraints, overcrowding, and privacy concerns. However, the presence of birth companions was found to be critically negatively associated with occurrences of disrespect and abuse of birthing women. The study suggests that birth companions can be a low-cost intervention model for promoting respectful maternity care in high-pressure public hospitals, but adequate infrastructure is crucial.
