New Opportunities to Improve Mental Health Crisis Systems

Michael F. Hogan et al.

Summary: National, state, and local actors in the United States are beginning to address the long-neglected mental health crisis system, with organized crisis care elements in place in some states. However, there are urgent problems such as increasing suicide rates and inappropriate use of emergency departments for psychiatric distress. Immediate challenges and opportunities are described, along with five action recommendations to move the systems forward and improve access and quality of care for individuals in psychiatric crisis. These recommendations include a central coordinating role for Congress and increased funding for research and evaluation.

The moral dilemma of interpreting workplace violence

Darcy Copeland et al.

Summary: Workplace violence in healthcare, particularly patient violence towards nurses, presents a complex ethical dilemma involving interpretation of the event and decision-making processes. Nurses prioritize patient safety while navigating the power dynamics in the RN-patient relationship, sometimes leading to dichotomous responses to violence incidents. The need for individualized responses to workplace violence and depolarizing the issue is emphasized.
