Lung Ultrasound for Predicting the Respiratory Outcome in Patients with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Yusuke Hoshino et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of lung ultrasound with whole chest scanning for predicting respiratory outcomes in patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The study found that the lung ultrasound score correlated with the severity of BPD and showed an improvement trend towards discharge. The lung ultrasound score at 28 days of life was found to predict moderate-to-severe BPD and the need for home oxygen therapy.

The Etiology of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Death in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants: A Multicenter Survey in China

Jianguo Zhou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the causes of death in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants in Chinese tertiary NICUs, with respiratory distress syndrome-related neonatal respiratory failure, severe infection, and necrotizing enterocolitis being the most common. The causes of death varied across different postnatal age groups, with respiratory distress syndrome-related neonatal respiratory failure being the leading cause in early neonatal death, while severe infection and bronchopulmonary dysplasia were more common in late neonatal and postneonatal deaths. Developing specific prevention strategies for these identified causes may help improve ELBW survival rates.

Early assessment of lung aeration using an ultrasound score as a biomarker of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia: a prospective observational study

Ignacio Oulego-Erroz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the predictive value of a lung ultrasound (LUS) score in the development of moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD). The results showed that the LUS score on the 7th day of life could predict the development of sBPD effectively.

European Respiratory Society statement on thoracic ultrasound

Christian B. Laursen et al.

Summary: Thoracic ultrasound is increasingly important for pulmonologists, assisting in diagnosis, guiding procedures, and predicting treatment response. However, there is still a lack of data in some important areas, with potential for future multicenter collaborations to further strengthen evidence-based use.

Lung Ultrasound to Monitor Extremely Preterm Infants and Predict Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia A Multicenter Longitudinal Cohort Study

Barbara Loi et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound scores can be utilized to monitor lung aeration and function in extremely preterm infants, and they can predict the occurrence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, providing a new imaging tool and predictive method.

The Predictive Value of Lung Ultrasound Scores in Developing Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia A Prospective Multicenter Diagnostic Accuracy Study

Almudena Alonso-Ojembarrena et al.

Summary: This study showed that the LUS score has moderate diagnostic accuracy in predicting moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Scanning posterior lung fields slightly improved diagnostic accuracy only at the 14th day of life. Adding gestational age and sex can enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the LUS scores.

Lung Ultrasound Score Progress in Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: The lung ultrasound score in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome is gestational age dependent and significantly correlated with oxygenation status. It can predict bronchopulmonary dysplasia and is a useful, noninvasive tool to monitor respiratory status in this population.
