Effects of lactoferrin on infectious diseases in Japanese summer: A randomized, double- blinded, placebo-controlled trial

Hirotsugu Oda et al.

Summary: The study found that lactoferrin has a certain alleviating effect on infectious diseases in Japanese summer, especially for summer colds. In both the 200 mg and 600 mg groups, the duration of total infectious diseases and summer colds was shorter compared to the placebo group.

Evidence from systematic reviews of randomized trials on enteral lactoferrin supplementation in preterm neonates

Mohan Pammi et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials on enteral lactoferrin supplementation in preterm neonates showed clinical benefits in decreasing late-onset sepsis and other infections, but no significant effects on necrotizing enterocolitis, mortality, or neurodevelopmental impairment. There was significant statistical heterogeneity in the effects of lactoferrin on late-onset sepsis, with potential factors including study biases, differences in product effectiveness, dose or duration, and population risk profiles.

Lactoferrin reduces the risk of respiratory tract infections: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Akbar Shoukat Ali et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis indicates that lactoferrin administration can reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections and shows promising efficacy in managing symptoms and recovery of patients suffering from RTIs. More evidence is needed to further explore its potential role in managing COVID-19.

The in vitro antiviral activity of lactoferrin against common human coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 is mediated by targeting the heparan sulfate co-receptor

Yanmei Hu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the important role of HSPGs in SARS-CoV-2 cell attachment, and demonstrates the broad-spectrum antiviral activity of LF against various coronaviruses, especially with BLF being more potent than HLF. BLF binds to HSPGs to block viral attachment, and its antiviral activity can be antagonized by the HSPG mimetic heparin. Combination therapy experiment shows synergistic effect of LF with remdesivir in cell culture.
