In vitro toxicity evaluation of lomefloxacin-loaded MCM-41 mesoporous silica nanoparticles

Virginia Tzankova et al.

Summary: The study investigated the safety and cytotoxicity of lomefloxacin loaded in MCM-41 mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The results showed that loading lomefloxacin in MCM-41 reduced its cytotoxicity, especially at higher concentrations. Different cell cultures models displayed varying sensitivities to the protective effects of LF-MCM-41, suggesting potential improvements in lomefloxacin safety when incorporated into an appropriate drug delivery system.

Synthesis and Bioactivity of Guanidinium-Functionalized Pillar[5]arene as a Biofilm Disruptor

Shuwen Guo et al.

Summary: A novel guanidinium-functionalized pillar[5]arene, GP5, was designed and synthesized to effectively combat bacterial biofilms. GP5 showed high antibacterial potency against Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains and successfully disrupted preformed biofilms by penetrating biofilm barriers and destroying biofilm-enclosed bacteria. Additionally, host-guest complexation between GP5 and cefazolin sodium exhibited synergistic disruption activity against biofilms, providing a novel supramolecular platform for biofilm eradication.

Complexation of an Antimicrobial Peptide by Large-Sized Macrocycles for Decreasing Hemolysis and Improving Stability

Junyi Chen et al.

Summary: Water-soluble large-sized quaterphen[n]arenes (WQPns, n=3, 4) were designed and synthesized with significantly distinct recognition abilities for the antimicrobial peptide pexiganan. The complexation of pexiganan by WQP3 and WQP4 effectively decreased its hemolysis in rabbit red blood cells and enhanced its metabolic stability in the presence of proteinase K, rat plasma, and liver or kidney homogenates.

Synthetic Macrocycle Nanopore for Potassium-Selective Transmembrane Transport

Dan Qiao et al.

Summary: Synthetic nanopores have been developed for applications in membrane filtration technologies and biomolecular sensing, but challenges remain in providing them with atomically defined shape and deliberate placement of chemical groups. A chemically defined transmembrane nanopore, EPM, demonstrates stable transmembrane transport functionality, particularly with up to 21-fold selectivity for potassium over sodium ions.
