Bioinspired Modifications of PEEK Implants for Bone Tissue Engineering

Summary: PEEK has been increasingly used as an implant material due to its biocompatibility, chemical stability, and elastic modulus similar to natural bone, but suffers from poor integration with surrounding bone tissue. Various strategies for functionalizing the surface and changing the structure of PEEK have been proposed to improve its bioactivity. Inspired by bone tissue, this review explores ways to enhance the biocompatibility of PEEK implants and suggests directions for future multifunctional implant fabrication.

Strontium Laminarin polysaccharide modulates osteogenesis-angiogenesis for bone regeneration

Summary: The study synthesized a novel polysaccharide-strontium complex LP-Sr, which promotes bone regeneration by enhancing osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Experimental results show that LP-Sr effectively increases cell proliferation and gene expression levels, while suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory factor IL6.

Strontium-calcium phosphate hybrid cement with enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic properties for vascularised bone regeneration

Summary: A strontium-enhanced calcium phosphate hybrid cement (Sr-CPHC) was developed to improve the biological and physicochemical properties of CPC. Sr-CPHC exhibited longer initial setting time and higher compressive strength compared to CPC, showing enhanced cell activity and angiogenesis. In vivo evaluation demonstrated new bone formation in a rat model, indicating great potential for clinical applications in ischemic osteonecrosis and critical-size bone defects.
