Transparent and Photochromic Material Prepared by Copolymerization of Bismuth(III) Methacrylate

Bungo Ochiai et al.

Summary: Transparent, photochromic, and X-ray shielding polymer films were prepared by bulk radical copolymerization of bismuth(III) methacrylate and N,N-dimethylacrylamide. The refractive indices and X-ray shielding abilities increased with the bismuth content. Photochromism occurred through reversible redox reactions between the bismuth carboxylate structure and Bi(0), with the advantage of a simple preparation procedure using inexpensive substances over previously reported bismuth-containing polymers.

Bismuth Oxide Films for X-ray shielding: Effects of particle size and structural morphology

Le Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of size and morphology on X-ray shielding performance using micro- and nano-sized Bi2O3 films with different morphologies. It found that nanoflower Bi2O3 film exhibited the best X-ray shielding performance, especially at low energies, due to the synergy effects of particle size and morphology.

Evaluation of novel X-ray protective eyewear in reducing the eye dose to interventional radiology physicians

Mime Endo et al.

Summary: The new recommendation by the International Commission on Radiological Protection for an occupational eye dose limit of 20 mSv year(-1) is a drastic reduction from the previous limit of 150 mSv year(-1), highlighting the importance of protecting physicians' eyes from X-ray radiation. A study on novel 0.07 mm Pb glasses showed an average shielding effect of 61.4% for IVR physicians, indicating improved protection and comfort for physicians during procedures. Based on the study results, it is recommended that IVR physicians use these novel 0.07 mm Pb glasses to reduce their radiation exposure.

Evaluation of novel X-ray protective eyewear in reducing the eye dose to interventional radiology physicians

Mime Endo et al.

Summary: The International Commission on Radiological Protection has recommended an equivalent dose limit of 20 mSv year(-1) for occupational eye exposure, a significant decrease from the previous limit of 150 mSv year(-1). A study evaluating the shielding effects of novel 0.07 mm Pb glasses showed an improved protection of 61.4% for IVR physicians wearing these glasses during procedures. The lightweight and comfortable glasses were well-received by physicians and are recommended for reducing occupational radiation exposure.
