Radical Thinking: Scientific Rigor and Pragmatism

Scott R. Evans

Summary: There exists an innate desire to conduct research at a faster and cheaper rate, which is amplified by the pressures of today's business and politics. However, the pursuit of such desires can be dangerous and threaten our objectivity and reasoning abilities, resulting in studies with lower integrity, replicability, and applicability. Modern ideas, often hailed as innovation, include observational studies instead of randomized studies, the use of surrogate outcomes and diseases, and the adoption of alternative analytical approaches. These trends raise concerns about the erosion of evidentiary standards and the introduction of greater uncertainty, calling for a reevaluation of the emphasis on scientific rigor and the importance of pragmatic assessments in real-world practice.
