Social isolation, residential stability, and opioid use disorder among older Medicare beneficiaries: Metropolitan and non-metropolitan county comparison

Tse-Chuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between social isolation and opioid use disorder (OUD) prevalence among older Medicare beneficiaries, as well as the moderating effect of residential stability. The results suggest that social isolation is a significant factor for county-level OUD prevalence, regardless of metropolitan status. Moreover, high residential stability reinforces the positive relationship between social isolation and OUD prevalence, with a stronger association in metropolitan counties.

Trends in Opioid Use Disorder Among Older Adults: Analyzing Medicare Data, 2013-2018

Carla Shoff et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of opioid use disorder among older adults in the U.S. has increased by over 3-fold since 2013. Young-old beneficiaries (aged 65-69 years) were found to have a higher prevalence compared to other older adults, while dually eligible beneficiaries consistently had a greater burden of opioid use disorder than Medicare-only beneficiaries. Among different racial/ethnic groups, Blacks and American Indians/Alaskan Natives were more vulnerable to opioid use disorder.

Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Opioid Use Disorder and Poisoning Emergency Department Visits in Florida

Weiwei Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of individual race/ethnicity and community racial/ethnic mix on opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits in Florida. The results indicate that while white patients had the highest opioid-related ED visit rate, majority-black communities are catching up with majority-white communities. The likelihood of an opioid-related ED visit involving heroin, non-heroin poisoning, or OUD differed by patient race/ethnicity and community racial/ethnic mix, with minority patients and communities showing different patterns in involvement.
