Load-dependent relationships between frontal fNIRS activity and performance: A data-driven PLS approach

Kimberly L. Meidenbauer et al.

Summary: This study utilized a new statistical analysis to investigate the relationship between fNIRS activation and performance in working memory tasks. The results revealed higher fronto-parietal activation in the 2-back task compared to the 1-back task, with inconsistent results in the 3-back task. Multivariate analysis showed differences in the relationship between brain activity and performance across different task difficulty levels.

Shedding light on the prefrontal correlates of mental workload in simulated driving: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study

Christoph F. Geissler et al.

Summary: Through functional near-infrared spectroscopy and subjective ratings, the study found that demanding city environments induced higher subjective workload ratings and bilateral middle frontal gyrus activation compared to less demanding country environments in virtual driving scenarios. Further analysis identified activation in the right anterior dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a region highly involved in spatial working memory processing, suggesting it may be a suitable region for brain computer interfaces aimed at enhancing driver performance in complex environments.

This Is Your Brain on Autopilot: Neural Indices of Driver Workload and Engagement During Partial Vehicle Automation

Summary: This research found that drivers new to the technology remained engaged with the driving environment when operating under partial vehicle automation, suggesting that concerns surrounding driver disengagement under vehicle automation may need to be tempered, at least for new drivers.
