A cross-species comparative approach to assessing multi- and transgenerational effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals

Bernard Robaire et al.

Summary: Studies have mainly focused on the effects of EDCs on adult males and females, but exposure of mature or developing gametes can lead to multigenerational and transgenerational effects. By synthesizing knowledge across vertebrate species, potential mechanisms of EDC effects are discussed, and recommendations for advancing the field are proposed.

Hypoxic naked mole-rat brains use microRNA to coordinate hypometabolic fuels and neuroprotective defenses

Hanane Hadj-Moussa et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differential expression of miRNAs in naked mole-rat brains during hypoxia, primarily by suppressing energy-expensive processes to adapt to oxygen-deprived environments. Additionally, miRNAs were found to coordinate anaerobic glycolysis and induce neuroprotective, neuroinflammatory, and central signal transduction pathways during hypoxia.

GABA receptor inhibition and severe hypoxia induce a paroxysmal depolarization shift in goldfish neurons

Nariman Hossein-Javaheri et al.

Summary: Mammalian neurons undergo rapid excitotoxic cell death when deprived of oxygen, but goldfish have evolved a unique mechanism of survival in oxygen-free waters by utilizing GABA signaling. Inhibiting anoxic GABAergic neurotransmission in goldfish induces seizure-like activities, emphasizing the importance of an intact GABA-mediated inhibitory pathway to prevent such activities.

Summary: The study shows that exposure to high temperature or a combination of high temperature and hypoxia can induce changes in DNA methylation in Atlantic salmon. Different environmental conditions may lead to distinct epigenetic signatures, which are closely related to the duration of stress exposure.

Goldfish Response to Chronic Hypoxia: Mitochondrial Respiration, Fuel Preference and Energy Metabolism

Elie Farhat et al.

Summary: Goldfish acclimated to hypoxia mainly achieve metabolic suppression by adjusting glycolytic supply, reducing brain Na+/K+-ATPase, and downregulating COX, potentially decreasing mitochondrial density. The responses of mitochondrial respiration and key enzymes vary across tissues, indicating tissue-specific effects of hypoxia on metabolic pathways.

Hypometabolic Responses to Chronic Hypoxia: A Potential Role for Membrane Lipids

Elie Farhat et al.

Summary: Metabolic suppression is an essential strategy to cope with chronic hypoxia, and the remodeling of membrane lipids is proposed as a novel mechanism to suppress ATP use and production. Environmental factors such as temperature, diet, and body mass can impact the lipid composition of membranes, modulating metabolic capacity. Vertebrate champions of hypoxia tolerance and hibernating mammals show extensive changes in membrane lipids, which can promote the downregulation of ion pumps and energy metabolism to maintain ATP supply-demand balance in hypometabolic states.

Hypoxia Performance Curve: Assess a Whole-Organism Metabolic Shift from a Maximum Aerobic Capacity towards a Glycolytic Capacity in Fish

Yangfan Zhang et al.

Summary: The utility of measuring whole-animal performance to frame the metabolic response to environmental hypoxia is well established, but the toolbox to assess whole-animal metabolic performance remains rather limited. The individual approach to determining the limiting-O2 concentration curve increases statistical robustness and opens up the possibility of examining individual variability. The need to seamlessly integrate aerobic to anaerobic capacity assessments in a single respirometry trial is recognized, and further exploration of whole-organism anaerobic and aerobic capacity traits is needed.
