Temperature response of wheat affects final height and the timing of stem elongation under field conditions

Lukas Kronenberg et al.

Summary: This study investigates the genetic response of wheat stem elongation to temperature fluctuations, revealing a positive correlation between temperature response and the timing and height of stem elongation. Genome-wide association mapping identified temperature-responsive and temperature-irresponsive quantitative trait loci, with candidate genes related to flowering and growth pathways. Together with other genetic factors, these loci explained 71% of height variability, showcasing the potential of high-throughput field phenotyping for climate-resilient crop selection.

Phenomics data processing: A plot-level model for repeated measurements to extract the timing of key stages and quantities at defined time points

Lukas Roth et al.

Summary: Decision-making in breeding relies on capturing and predicting crop responses to changing environments, with high-throughput field phenotyping (HTFP) data processing requiring interdisciplinary knowledge. Processing phenomics data in stages is a feasible approach, improving results through carrying forward estimated means and variances. P-splines and QMER are suitable tools for extracting timing and quantities from HTFP data.

Growth dynamics and heritability for plant high-throughput phenotyping studies using hierarchical functional data analysis

Yuhang Xu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method based on hierarchical functional principal component analysis for recovering plant trait trajectories and derivatives in high-throughput plant phenotyping, as well as proposing a new measure for broad-sense heritability. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms competitors in recovering plant trait trajectories and derivatives. Interesting characteristics of plant growth and heritability dynamics are revealed in the application to a modern plant phenotyping study.

Modelling temporal genetic and spatio-temporal residual effects for high-throughput phenotyping data

A. P. Verbyla et al.

Summary: High-throughput phenomics data collected in both laboratory and field settings are analyzed to investigate genetic effects over time and non-genetic effects over time and space using factor analytic models and reduced rank tensor smoothing splines. Model selection for genetic effects is discussed, with comparisons made to simpler models, showing the interplay between genetic and residual models.
