Is Allometric Variation in the Cephalic Horn on Male Rhinoceros Beetles Discontinuously Dimorphic?

Gary C. Packard

Summary: The author re-examined the allometric relationship between the length of the cephalic horn and the width of the pronotum for 28 species of rhinoceros beetle using linear and nonlinear regression techniques. The analyses revealed that the allometric variation in all 28 species is continuous and can be described by a single mathematical function. The differences in findings from a previous investigation were attributed to problems introduced by logarithmic transformation of the data and an overly complex statistical protocol for classifying individual males.
