Bone health and therapeutic agents in advanced prostate cancer

Maria Antonia Gomez-Aparicio et al.

Summary: Maintaining optimal bone health is crucial for the management of prostate cancer, especially in older and frail patients and those who experience bone loss or bone metastases due to treatment. Bisphosphonates and denosumab have shown promising results in improving bone mineral density and reducing the risk of skeletal-related events in these patients.

Estrogen depletion on In vivo osteocyte calcium signaling responses to mechanical loading

Karl J. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ovariectomy alters the acute response of osteocytes to mechanical loading, with changes in the number, composition, and organization of osteocyte mechanosomes. Estrogen deprivation also affects the ability of osteocytes to sense small mechanical stimuli, potentially due to alterations in the structure and organization of their mechanosomes.

Bone Mineral Density in Different Menopause Stages is Associated with Follicle Stimulating Hormone Levels in Healthy Women

Young-Min Park et al.

Summary: Despite the commonly believed importance of estradiol in menopause-related decrease in bone mineral density, the role of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in menopause remains unclear. A study of 141 healthy women revealed that spine and hip bone mineral density was lower in later menopausal stages, with an inverse association with FSH and a direct association with estradiol levels. Future research is needed to further understand how FSH regulates bone health in aging women.

Sex Steroid Regulation of Oxidative Stress in Bone Cells: An In Vitro Study

Valeria Sibilia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of sex steroids in oxidative stress-induced alteration in bone cell homeostasis and assessed the contribution of epigenetic modifications. The findings suggest that estrogens and androgens counteract the effects of oxidative stress on bone cells partially through the Akt pathway. Overall, these results indicate that the hormonal milieu may influence the mechanisms of age-related bone disease.

The Relationship Between Bone and Reproductive Hormones Beyond Estrogens and Androgens

Edouard G. Mills et al.

Summary: Reproductive hormones play a key role in the growth and maintenance of mammalian skeleton, impacting bone density and risk of fractures. Recent research on traditional reproductive hormones as well as new reproductive neuro peptides and hormones has enhanced our understanding of the interaction between bone and the reproductive system.

Osteocytes and Estrogen Deficiency

Laoise M. McNamara

Summary: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is not only characterized by bone loss due to decreased estrogen levels, but also by alterations in mechanosensitive osteocytes. Research shows that estrogen deficiency affects the osteocyte mechanical and microenvironment, leading to impaired mechanobiological responses and exacerbating osteocyte regulation of osteoclasts. Understanding these changes is crucial for developing targeted therapies to inhibit resorption and secondary mineralization in osteoporosis.

Cortical and trabecular morphometric properties of the human calvarium

Kevin Adanty et al.

Summary: This study used micro-CT imaging to analyze the morphometric properties of the diploe? and cortical layers of the human calvarium, considering factors such as sex, location, and layers. The results provided valuable insights for finite element modelers of the skull and contributed to the development of physical surrogate models of the skull for predicting injury accurately.

Estrogen prevents cellular senescence and bone loss through Usp10-dependent p53 degradation in osteocytes and osteoblasts: the role of estrogen in bone cell senescence

Yu Wei et al.

Summary: Estrogen negatively correlates with p53-related cellular senescence by regulating p53 protein levels and preventing its nuclear import, speeding up p53 degradation in bone cells.

Estrogen depletion alters osteogenic differentiation and matrix production by osteoblasts in vitro

J. Schiavi et al.

Summary: Estrogen depletion affects osteoblasts' response to mechanical stimulation, leading to changes in differentiation and matrix production. These alterations contribute to the deterioration of bone quality during estrogen depletion, potentially increasing bone fragility in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Follicle stimulating hormone and estradiol alter immune response in osteoarthritic mice in an opposite manner

Lyudmila Belenska-Todorova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of 17 beta-estradiol (ED) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) on bone marrow cell differentiation in arthritic mice. The results showed that FSH favored osteoclast formation, while ED favored osteoblast accumulation. Both hormones influenced cellular differentiation processes in osteoarthritis, with FSH promoting cartilage degradation and ED inhibiting it.

The Skull's Girder: A Brief Review of the Cranial Base

Shankar Rengasamy Venugopalan et al.

Summary: The cranial base is a bony platform that supports the brain and skull vault, connects the head to the vertebral column, and integrates with the facial skeleton. Development of the cranial base from cartilage through endochondral ossification is unique, and birth defects impacting this area often coincide with anomalies. Despite its importance, research on the genetic control of cranial base development lags behind other craniofacial structures.
