Surfactant Protein-A Function: Knowledge Gained From SP-A Knockout Mice

Lynnlee Depicolzuane et al.

Summary: Pulmonary surfactant proteins, especially surfactant protein A (SP-A), play important roles in surfactant-related functions, innate immunity, and lung health. SP-A interacts with alveolar macrophages and other alveolar epithelial cells to modulate their function and impact the alveolar microenvironment. Knockout mouse experiments have provided valuable insights into the various functions of SP-A, particularly in infection models.

SP-A and SP-D: Dual Functioning Immune Molecules With Antiviral and Immunomodulatory Properties

Alastair Watson et al.

Summary: SP-A and SP-D are soluble innate immune molecules that play dual roles as anti-infectious and immunomodulatory agents, maintaining lung homeostasis. They have the potential to bind various viruses, including influenza A virus and RSV, modulating viral clearance and inflammatory response, thus showing therapeutic potential.

Differential Regulation of Human Surfactant Protein A Genes, SFTPA1 and SFTPA2, and Their Corresponding Variants

Joanna Floros et al.

Summary: Human SFTPA1 and SFTPA2 genes encode SP-A1 and SP-A2, with significant genetic and epigenetic variability. These surfactant proteins play important roles in innate immunity and surfactant-related functions. Differential regulation between SFTPA1 and SFTPA2, focusing on UTRs and flanking sequences, is the key focus of this review.

Human Surfactant Protein SP-A1 and SP-A2 Variants Differentially Affect the Alveolar Microenvironment, Surfactant Structure, Regulation and Function of the Alveolar Macrophage, and Animal and Human Survival Under Various Conditions

Joanna Floros et al.

Summary: The human innate host defense molecules SP-A1 and SP-A2 variants have a differential impact on survival after infection in mice and lung transplant patients. SP-A interacts with alveolar macrophages and plays a role in surfactant-related aspects, potentially making it an important molecule in health and disease. The genetic complexity of SP-A can contribute to dysregulation of host defense and inflammatory processes in pulmonary diseases.
