Advantages of Continuous Monitoring of Hourly PM2.5 Component Concentrations in Japan for Model Validation and Source Sensitivity Analyses

Satoru Chatani et al.

Summary: Continuous monitoring of hourly PM2.5 component concentrations in Japan showed advantages for regional air quality simulations, with improvements when including transboundary transport, volcanic and dust emissions. However, challenges remain in accurately estimating certain pollutants and addressing speciation profiles. Comparing observed and simulated hourly concentrations can help identify key processes impacting air quality, such as evening peaks in black carbon and morning peaks in NO3- concentrations.

Summary: The COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 resulted in a significant reduction in NO2 concentrations in the atmosphere in China, with influences not only from the lockdown measures but also from the Spring Festival holiday and meteorological changes.

Spatiotemporal mapping and assessment of daily ground NO2 concentrations in China using high-resolution TROPOMI retrievals

Sensen Wu et al.

Summary: The study developed a spatiotemporal regression kriging model to map daily high-resolution ground NO2 concentrations in China using TROPOMI satellite retrievals. Results showed a 14% reduction in ground NO2 concentrations during the COVID-19 period compared to 2019 and a 25% decrease in mean population exposure to ground NO2. The newly satellite-derived ground NO2 data have value in advancing environmental and health research in China.

Nitrogen burden from atmospheric deposition in East Asian oceans in 2010 based on high-resolution regional numerical modeling

Syuichi Itahashi et al.

Summary: The East Asian oceans are heavily impacted by atmospheric nitrogen deposition, with emissions dominated by ammonia and nitrogen oxides. Deposition of reduced nitrogen dominates over most land and open ocean, while oxidized nitrogen dominates over marginal seas and desert areas. Dry deposition of nitric acid and wet deposition of fine-mode nitrate and ammonium are important processes determining nitrogen deposition over the region.

Multiphase Oxidation of Sulfur Dioxide in Aerosol Particles: Implications for Sulfate Formation in Polluted Environments

Tengyu Liu et al.

Summary: Research on multiphase oxidation of aerosol SO2 has made significant progress in recent years, with a focus on East Asia. Compared to oxidation in cloud water, the extremely high solute concentrations in aerosol particles result in differences in the molecular level oxidation reactions.

Trans-Regional Transport of Haze Particles From the North China Plain to Yangtze River Delta During Winter

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: Research shows that cold fronts can lead to the trans-regional transport of haze particles from the North China Plain to the Yangtze River Delta in winter, with changes in composition and aging of the aerosols. Tarballs, mainly from residential coal burning, are a major component, transformed into hydrophilic particles by secondary coatings during the transport. These nanosized particles, along with their coatings, can travel over 1,000 km and have implications for regional climate and human health in northern and eastern China.

Year-round modeling of sulfate aerosol over Asia through updates of aqueous-phase oxidation and gas-phase reactions with stabilized Criegee intermediates

Syuichi Itahashi et al.

Summary: The study reevaluated gas-phase and aqueous-phase oxidation processes, which led to an increase in simulated SO42- concentration. The model performance in winter over Asia was effectively improved by the updates, without degrading the model performance in other seasons.

Long-term trends of satellite-based fine-mode aerosol optical depth over the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, over two decades (2001-2020)

Syuichi Itahashi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the long-term trends of air pollution over the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, showing changes in AOD(f) values from 2001 to 2020, with a decrease especially after 2010. Aerosol pollution from long-range transport from the Asian continent also impacts pollution levels over the SIS. Reductions in aerosol pollution in 2020 can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on human activity and regulations on SO2 emissions from ships.

Changes in China's anthropogenic emissions and air quality during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 lockdowns in China led to a significant reduction in anthropogenic emissions, particularly in February 2020, with the industry sector mainly contributing to the decrease in SO2 and PM2.5 emissions. As the virus was controlled, China's emissions rebounded in the second half of 2020, reaching comparable levels to 2019.
