Summary: A one-year fixed-path observation was conducted to study seasonally varying subsurface ducted sound propagation in the Beaufort Sea. Different time behaviors were observed for ducted and surface-interacting sounds. A computational model was used to simulate local conditions, showing that the Pacific Summer Water moves northward from the Alaskan coastal area in late summer to strengthen the sound duct.

An empirical model for wind-generated ocean noise

Summary: The empirical model for wind-generated underwater noise was developed using a large dataset of acoustic field recordings and a global wind model. It aims to separate noise generated by wind-related sources from anthropogenic sources, considering surface wave and turbulence interactions, and bubble and bubble cloud oscillations as key mechanisms. The model shows small frequency dependence at low frequencies and larger frequency dependence at higher frequencies, with noise levels decreasing at high frequencies at the highest wind speeds due to interactions between bubbles and screening of noise radiation in the presence of high-density bubble clouds.
