Assessing water security across scales: A case study of the United States

Tess Doeffinger et al.

Summary: Water security assessments should consider multiple scales, balancing natural phenomenon scale, data availability scale, decision-making scale, and precision versus accuracy. In a multiscale analysis of the United States at state and county levels, despite challenges in data acquisition, it can reveal security issues at different scales and demonstrate spatial heterogeneity.

Assessing the ecological vulnerability of the shallow steppe Lake Neusiedl (Austria-Hungary) to climate-driven hydrological changes using a palaeolimnological approach

Monica Tolotti et al.

Summary: The largest steppe lake in Europe, Lake Neusiedl, is highly sensitive to climate variations due to its extreme shallowness and low catchment to lake area ratio. A multi-proxy palaeolimnological reconstruction revealed the evolution of the lake since its last complete desiccation, highlighting the importance of subfossil diatoms in tracking long-term changes in trophic conditions. The study also confirmed the high vulnerability of Lake Neusiedl to climate-driven changes in water level and salinity, with potential implications for future ecological changes in the context of global warming.

Spatial differentiation and driving mechanism of rural water security in typical engineering water depletion of karst mountainous area-A lesson of Guizhou, China

Feng Zhou et al.

Summary: The study in Guizhou Province revealed significant spatial variation in rural water security index, mainly influenced by economic and social factors such as disposable income of rural residents and incidence of impoverishment. Critical factors affecting rural water security include impoverishment, rural piped water penetration rate, percentage of primary industry, and karst area ratio. Interactive driver factor of groundwater percentage and rural residents' disposable income showed the primary reason for low rural water security is the interaction between high groundwater percentage due to karst development and low rural income.

A hydrological perspective on drought risk-assessment in the Yellow River Basin under future anthropogenic activities

Abubaker Omer et al.

Summary: The future drought risk in the Yellow River Basin will be influenced by land-use/land cover changes and consumptive water use. LULCC-BAU2 scenario is projected to increase the risk of mild and moderate droughts, while CWU and LULCC-BAU1 scenarios will impose higher risk of severe and extreme events.

Ecological Security Assessment Based on Remote Sensing and Landscape Ecology Model

Pei Liu et al.

Summary: The research aims to establish a landscape ecological security evaluation method based on grid division, integrating various algorithms models, utilizing remote sensing data and machine learning algorithm to assess the ecological security status of Zhengzhou city. Results showed that high ecological safety areas gradually decrease over time, with the prediction that lower ecological security areas will dominate Zhengzhou's ecological security level by 2026.
