Rewinding Extinction in the Northern White Rhinoceros: Genetically Diverse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Bank for Genetic Rescue

Marisa L. Korody et al.

Summary: Research has successfully generated a set of iPSCs from fibroblasts of northern and southern white rhinoceros to aid in the conservation of highly endangered species. This method can capture some of the dwindling genetic diversity of disappearing species and is the first step of an assisted reproduction technology plan.

Summary: In vitro gametogenesis, the production of gametes from pluripotent stem cells in culture, is a valuable tool for reproductive biology and regenerative medicine. While initially developed in mice, it is now being applied in other mammalian species, including humans. While the methodology in mouse system is not completely transferrable to other species, there is potential for further optimization and development of this technology.
